Nelson Mandela: quintessential peacemaker, global icon of racial reconciliation, political prisoner, president, statesman... artist.
Nelson Mandela, winner of the Nobel Piece Prize, and recognised as one of the world’s greatest statesmen, spent 27 years imprisoned as a direct result of his efforts to ensure the freedom of all men and women in South Africa. Eighteen of those years were spent in brutal conditions on Robben Island: an ex-naval base that would later become a penal colony and dumping ground for those the South African government labelled dissidents.
Years later, Robben Island is the first of South Africa’s Heritage sites – representing to the world the symbolic banishing of South Africa’s future leaders during the regime of an oppressive government.
Released on 11 February1990, Nelson Mandela left Robben Island to become not only the president of the recently unbanned African National Congress, but also, on 10 May 1994, the first black president of South Africa. Today, Nelson Mandela is known as a powerful icon of human freedom for oppressed people all over the world - and an unrelenting advocate of human rights.
With the launch of the ‘Touch of Mandela’ initiative, this well-loved public figure reveals yet another side to himself- that of a sensitive and serious artist. The sketches that form the Nelson Mandela Collection were completed by Mr Mandela with the help of Varenka Paschke, a young South African artist who privately tutored him and assisted with both the composition and applicationof colour in all the pieces.
